With the digital age steadily consuming the world every year, fast internet connections are now more important than ever. But not all countries can afford fast internet.

Curious which countries have the fastest internet speeds in the world? Check out this list, which is based on the Speedtest Global Index for the month of October.

The Speedtest Global Index records both the internet speeds of mobile and fixed broadband. But for this list, we mainly focused on the fixed broadband side. All the numbers mentioned here account for only the download speeds.

1. Singapore

Singapore is famed for consistently having one of the fastest internet speeds in the world. In fact, the country has owned the top spot since the beginning of the year, kicking off 2017 with 142.39 Mbps in January. For October, Singapore is tops with 148.62 Mbps, more than a full 10 Mbps faster than the next on the list.

The fastest speed for Singapore so far in 2017 was 156.67 Mbps, which was recorded for the month of September. It’s almost certain that the country will once again be at the top once the November results are in. On the mobile internet side, Singapore is at a competitive 49.86 Mbps for the month of October, good for fifth place.

2. Hong Kong

Hong Kong is not only a wonderful place for some rest and recreation, it’s also a great place for browsing the internet and watching online videos until dawn. The country boasted 137.40 Mbps for the month of October, easily earning it a top three spot on the list. That number is actually down from September when Hong Kong recorded 145.17 Mbps.

Hong Kong started the year in the below-100 range with 91.75 Mbps but steadily picked up steam over the next few months. The country sailed past 100 Mbps in June when it recorded 107.95 Mbps, though its position in the rankings still remained the same as the previous month. In terms of mobile internet, Hong Kong is right in the middle of the pack with 33.05 Mbps.

3. Iceland

The Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden – are staples when it comes to the fastest internet speeds in the world. Back in 2015, all except Iceland placed in the top 10 in the Akamai Technologies State of the Internet Report for Q4 2015

Iceland is the first of only two Nordic countries on this list. The country clocked 134.80 Mbps for the month of October, making it back-to-back months at the number three spot for the Nordic country often mistaken for Greenland. Iceland has yet to record a below-100 Mbps for 2017, going only as “slow” as 106.37 Mbps in April. On the mobile internet side, Iceland is second on the list at 58.35 Mbps.

4. South Korea

The undisputed leader in competitive gaming, South Korea is always included in the list of the fastest internet speeds in the world. It’s kind of necessary for the country to have fast internet, considering online gaming is practically a national sport there.

For the month of October, South Korea recorded 108.89 Mbps, allowing it to stay in fourth place after also ranking that high in September. The country topped in August with 126.72 Mbps, which was only good for third place. On the mobile internet front, South Korea almost broke into the top 10 with 41.23 Mbps, which is good for 11th place on the list.

5. Romania

You probably didn’t expect Romania to be on the list. A lot of people on the internet joke about Romania being an outdated country with vampires running the show. But in actuality, Romania is a pretty modernized country – and one indicator is its top-notch internet speed.

In October, Romania scored 97.70 Mbps, which is higher than the US and many other European countries. The country has been one of the most consistent performers in 2017, staying in the 85-95 Mbps range before peaking in September with 98.39 Mbps. Romania recorded its lowest in February with 85.60 Mbps. On the mobile internet side, Romania is in the middle of the pack with 27.90 Mbps for the month of October.

6. Netherlands

Netherlands is another country which consistently ranks high among the very best when it comes to the fastest internet speeds in the world. The country is a safe bet to appear in the top 10 in any given year, a testament to how the Dutch government places importance on fast internet connection.

For October, Netherlands recorded 87.04 Mbps, a huge jump from the 71.95 Mbps it recorded in September when it ranked outside the top 10 at number 12. The country’s recorded speed for October is also its peak so far. In regard to mobile internet speed, Netherlands is one of the best, recording 51.99 Mbps, which is good for number three in October.

7. Macau

Nicknamed the “Las Vegas of Asia,” Macau is one of the best leisure places to go to for people who can’t afford to go to Sin City. It’s also a great place for internet surfing. For the month of October, Macau registered 86.37 Mbps, a slight drop from its 2017 peak of 87.63 Mbps, which was registered the month before.

Macau had a rather inconsistent stretch in the last few months. The country recorded 66.32 Mbps in March, 75.65 Mbps in April, 73.73 Mbps in May, 81.63 Mbps in June, and 80.11 Mbps in July. All numbers still ranked in the top 10, though, so there was really no reason for concern. For mobile internet speed, Macau recorded 28.97 Mbps in October, which is only good for number 35 on the list.

8. Sweden

Sweden is the second Nordic country on this list, sitting five spots away from Iceland. As mentioned above, the Nordic countries are among the very best when it comes to internet speeds, so it’s not really surprising to find at least two or three of them in any top 10 list.

For October, Sweden checked in with 79.06 Mbps, which bumped it down to eighth after ranking seventh in September with 78.10 Mbps. Sweden has been having a pretty consistent year in terms of internet speed – no dramatic drops or leaps in the standings yet. On the mobile internet side, Sweden is number 17 in the rankings with 35.47 Mbps.

9. Switzerland

Known for its chocolates and impregnable bank laws, Switzerland is one of the richest countries in the world. So naturally, securing fast internet speeds is no big deal for the small country. At 77.24 Mbps, Switzerland barely missed the number eight spot, a spot it held last September by posting 76.84 Mbps.

Like Sweden, Switzerland has been having a consistent year, with the only anomaly happening in May when it posted 85.04 Mbps, the only time the country has broken the 80 Mbps mark so far in 2017. In regard to mobile internet speeds, Switzerland ranks in the top 20, recording 37.41 Mbps in October.

10. Hungary

Capping off the list is Hungary, which has been hovering near the number 10 spot all year. Since January, Hungary ranked 11th, 12th, or 13th before finally entering the top 10 in September, courtesy of a 73.66 Mbps mark.

For the month of October, Hungary posted 76.99 Mbps and seems poised to hold its spot among the top 10 for the remainder of the year. Hungary started the year at number 13 with 60.36 Mbps. Since then, the country’s internet speed has steadily improved. At 47.98 Mbps, Hungary is easily one of the best when it comes to mobile internet speeds, ranking sixth in that department.
